My maiden name is "Gilchrist". I belong to the Scottish Clan MacLachlan
GILCHRIST SON WROTE THIS TO HIS FATHER FOR FATHER'S DAY
I highly prize your Gilchrist name;
It honors me, for mine’s the same. The Gilchrist name has come to mean, To many folks, what they have seen – Some things like love and faithfulness. It makes them think of friendliness, For they have known the Gilchrist smile – A mark of Gilchrists all the while. They’ve known the Gilchrist honesty And his dependability. They’ve come to trust the Gilchrist name, And honor it with local fame. It may not win worldwide acclaim – That matters not; but such a name Will always be a joy to bear – A source of pride for us to wear! But even more than all these things, It points us to the King of Kings! It calls to mind another name Which is above all other names – The name of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, The One whose life was sacrificed – Before whom all will one day bow – Those dead before, or living now. The meaning of it I will tell: A gillie did in Scotland dwell, And served the Scottish chieftains well; Thus, "Gil" a "servant" spell. The next part, "christ," is Him who died That God in us be glorified. A "Gilchrist," then – I say to you – If to his name he would be true, A servant to the Christ must be – And give Him first his loyalty! Oh what an honor thus to wear This greater Name that’s ours to bear! God, make us Your servants true – That as our name, we shall serve You! I thank you, God, for this good name; May it bring glory to Your name! I’m proud to be a Gilchrist’s son
A servant of our Father’s Son!
Don Gilchrist, for Father's Day, 1977
Who is Clan MacLachlan?
Clan MacLachlan is one of the oldest of all Scottish Clans. According to Irish manuscripts, the Clan is descended from the same line as the O'Neills, High Kings of Ireland. The name MacLachlan means "son of Lachlan", and Lachlan itself is from the older Gaelic name Lachlann which literally means "land of lochs". It was a common Christian name in the family tree of the High Kings. As early as 1230 Gilchrist MacLachlan witnessed a land charter and in 1292 Gilleskel MacLachlan received a charter for his land in Argyll. A MacLachlan served in the first parliament of Robert The Bruce in Saint Andrews. The MacLachlans were loyal supporters to the Stewarts and fought in all the royalist campaigns. In the 1745 uprising with Prince Charles Edward Stewart, the Chief of the Clan served the Prince and was lost at Culloden while commanding a regiment of 300 men. The loss of the battle and war resulted in the destruction of the castle by the British in 1746. The present Castle Lachlan was built in 1790 and is the home of Euan John Rome Maclachlan of Maclachlan, the 25th Chief. It is located in Strathlachlan, near Strachur, on the banks of Loch Fyne in Argyll.

The Gilchrists - A Sept of Clan MacLachlan
The first mention of the Gilchrists appears to be 1132 when Gillecrist mac Finguni and Gillecrist mac Cormoic witnessed several Grants made in behalf of the Abbeys of Paisley and Lennox. Gillascop MacGilchrist had a charter of the five pennylands of Fyncharne and others in 1243 from King Alexander II. This charter is probably the oldest one in existence dealing with lands in Argyllshire. Alun MacGillecrist was one of the witnesses to a charter by Moregrund, Earl of Mar. Duncan MacGilchrist of Levenaghes (Lennox) rendered homage in 1296 at Berwick-on-Tweed. The seal attached to his homage bears an eight-ray figure and S'Duncan McGhilc. At that date Johan Enynsone MacGilchrist, one of the king's tenants in Perthshire, also rendered homage. Donenaldus Makgilkriste, dominus de Tarbard, granted to the Monks of Paisley the right of cutting wood within all his territory for the building and repair of their monastery. The charter is undated but probably comes from around the end of the thirteenth century. From Donald (Donenaldus Makgilkriste), according to Crawford, are descended from the MacGilchrists of Northbarr. Merquihir McIlcrist was tenant in Cornekmoir, Tiree in 1541. Gillechreiste McIlchreist and Donald Beg McIhchreist in Glenlyon were fined for harboring members of Clan Gregor in 1613. Evidence of a Gilchrist sculptor can even be found at Iona. The Saint Martin's Cross bears the inscription "a prayer for Gilchrist who made this cross."

What Does Gilchrist Mean?
Gilchrist means Servant of Christ. The name spelled in Gaelic is MacIllechriosd. The Gilchrist Motto The Gilchrist of Glasrie motto is Mea Gloria Fides which means I Hope To Speed. The MacGilchrist of Northbarr motto is Cogit in Hostem. The Gilchrist Crests The most common Gilchrist crest is defined as: a lion rampant holding a flagstaff, both argent, the flagstaff capped in or, thereon hoisted a banner azure charged with a horse argent. The horse is a symbol of readiness and the lion represents strength, courage and generosity. A second, but far less commonly seen, crest is that of MacGilchrist of Northbarr. The crest is defined as: A lion's paw in bend Argent

"MEN IN KILTS",ANYONE????

Strapping lads in thick socks and wild hair who rove the hills blowing bagpipes in the mist while wanting legs o' lamb. Brooding men who sit on rocks and rub the purple heather raw and dream of dinner in the stars with sheep-wool softened hands. With sheep-wool weave against their thighs And blinding patterns ever nigh The men in kilts will make me sigh When they kick their legs up high

My father was born in Fierro,NM.in March,1910 just before New Mexico became a state. His father,my Grandfather,JB.Gilchrist, was an appointed delegate to the committee that drew up the constitution New Mexico. He was a self made man in Silver City & very well loved by all. He owned one of the largest cattle ranches in New,Mexico,The GOS Ranch. A mercantile Store,The gilchrist & Dawson,Inc.,mines near & around silver City. He helped develope the mining there & railroads. My father being the oldest of 8 children spent many summers working the GOS Ranch with his father. From my father, I heard many stories of the ranch & also of his hunting with Ben Lilly,who lived on the GOS. Ben was hired to hunt preditors on the ranch. Ben is a legend in himself. Teddy Rosevelt wrote about Ben Lilly,who was his guide on a hunting trip. Books have been written about him,As a Mountian Man & bear & lion Expert & hunter.His mother was Scottish. Ben never slept inside,but when at the GOS,always outside behind the barn with his hounds,winter or summer. Following I will just post a few pictures of Ben Lilly,some at the GOS Ranch,pictures of my Father,My mother who was born in Deming & her Mom lived 71 years in Deming,New Mexico. All my family pictures & history in Silver City & Deming I will be doing anoter website on. My father was a true cowboy & the fondest memories I have of him,are of the long rides we had together. He taught me a great love of horses & the wild West,a True ccowboy's life on the range & outdoors. Up until his death in 1983,he could be found out here in the desert,searhing out an old mine. As a Mechanical engineer,his first job was at the Santa Rita Copper Mine,close to his birthplace,Fierro,NM. & where my older brother was born. Enjoy,Kathleen

I would be interested in corresponding with any other Gilchrists that are in my family genealogy from above. I'm hoping to perhaps find a MacLachlan,MacGilchrist,living in Scotland ,who could give me more specific family details. Or any other MacLachlans anywhere. I'm very interested in finding out how to search old records from Scotland as in regards to the early Gilchrist's I find in my family tree posted above. I'm also very interested in knowing more about the "Battle of Culloden" in 1746 in relation to my clan & the Jacobites. I plan on visiting Scotland & it would be nice to know other's from Scotland that can give me some really good advice on places of interest to visit & how to really get to see Scotland & not feel like a tourist. All the great out of the way places.
Thank You, Kathleen
